Cool Elective Class- Fire Ant Research and Removal

This semester a cool class was created in collaboration with Mama Chioke, Ms. MollyYates and Ms. Amy.  We are researching the Red Invasive Fire Ant, which is actually 2 ant species.
 Little Fire Ant- Wasmannia auropunctata
Red Imported Ant - Solenopsis invictus
We will grow crops RIFA enjoy eating and research daily habits to better understand a viable means of control.

We have a great group of students researching the habitat, diet and natural biocontrols.  The goal of the class is to create a class book and a scientific research paper to turn over to the county and UHH.  RIFA are impressive invasive species that eat crops and harm farmers.  The RIFA also contribute to student and teacher irritation on campus due to the stinging bite the RIFA inflicts here.

Middle School Life.

In Earth Science, we studied volcanoes and created our own examples.

Another laboratory in Earth Science, we made fudge to recreate the rock cycle.  It was a tasty learning treat.

Halloween 2010.  Our seventh grade definitely had spirit this year.

The keiki house, Over the Rainbow, had a great bunch of students and adults who worked hard and had a lot of fun.

A very busy week

7th grade on their way to the first field trip of the year.
What is our big adventure?  A two part trip.  1: Lyman Museum with Ms. Dee. 2: A squid dissection at Mokupapapa.  Lucky students!

Great group work ladies!
Our fabulous host Ms. Tanya giving an awesome squid anatomy lecture.

 Another great group at work.

A great looking specimen.

Writing with the squid ink and pen.  What is the pen an artifact of?

8th grade class.

So we brought back some parts of the squid dissection to look at under a microscpe.  Ms. Amy had the super fun task of cleaning out the petri dishes.  Mmmm, smells fishy.

Lyman Museum would not allow us to take pictures, we will have to remember the visit.  Overall, a great trip.
